Venerable Sarana

Brief Resume of Venerable Sarana

(Vinayalankara Meditation Center, Czech Republic)

Born in the Czech Republic and known as Jan Stovicek as a layperson, he studied at the Catholic High School of Plzen (Pilsen) in West Bohemia. At 15, he became a Buddhist follower after reading about Buddhism in a local library. In 2007, in his 20 years, he moved to Sri Lanka, where he became a novice Czech Sarana and trained under the Venerable Pemasiri Thero. In 2012, Czech Sarana received a Bachelor’s degree in Buddhist Philosophy and Religious Studies from the Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka, Homagama, and moved to Myanmar, where he was ordained as a bhikkhu Ashin Sarana in the Shwe Oo Min Tawya of Mingalardon. There, with the support of his preceptor Sayadaw U Pannavamsa (U Pyin Nyar Wun Thar), he trained for five years in meditation according to the meditation technique of venerable Pemasiri and Sayadaw U Tejaniya; and memorised Pali scriptures, especially Parajikapali and Pacittiyapali of Vinaya Pitaka. From 2017, Ashin Sarana actively shared Dhamma and meditation instruction in meditation centres Sakhangyi Tawya of Hlegu and Rahula Kyaung of Hmawbi to non-Burmese and Burmese students alike, all the while he also visited countries on invitation, such as Australia, the USA, Singapore, Thailand, and European countries to teach Dhamma and meditation. After the military coup in Myanmar in 2021, Ashin Sarana left Myanmar for the Czech Republic to support Myanmar people in their endeavour for basic freedoms freely. In 2022 moved to Vietnam on an invitation to teach Dhamma and meditation. Since 2019 he has been actively teaching Dhamma to preteen and teenage children through weekly online classes and participated in the monthly or biweekly inter-religious dialogues organised by HWPL. Since 2022 Ashin Sarana has been studying at a Master’s Degree program in clinical mental health counseling at the Liberty University of Virginia.
