Truthfulness is a very vital quality of a Buddhist practitioner. In Pañcasīla (Five Precepts) Musāvāda (Telling Lies / False Speech) is placed fourth and Five Precepts are an integral part of Buddhist practice. Every lay person has to observe Five Precepts. The Pali word ‘sacca’ means (truth) and it is also one of the ten Perfections (Pāramitā) of a Bodhisatta who is in pursuit of his spiritual perfection. It is also said the Bodhisatta has never broken this precept in his Pāramita period reflecting the kind of priority that the Buddha has prescribed for his disciples when they practice the Dhamma. Truthfulness is about the sincerity and honesty that one can commit to oneself. It is not about covering yourself with some malicious words or strategies but about being so pure and confident by being truthful. Saccakiriya (Asservation) is another practice that the Buddhists do to heal others using their own power of truthfulness. Many a times, the Buddhist monks use ‘etena sacca vajjena sotthi te hotu sabbadā (by the power of this truth, may you be well forever!) following the protective chanting they use to heal the community. Hence, being truthful is of immensely powerful practice among Buddhist practitioners. Lying is never an option in Buddhist practice even at the cost of one’s own life. In order to practice this precept, there is a wonderful strategy used by the Buddhists that’s to maintain noble silence. How amazingly meaningful practice is this!
