Venerable American Sumana

Credentials of Venerable American Sumana:

  • Venerable Sumana is an American novice monk who currently lives in Sri Lanka at the famous Na-Uyana Forest monastery prior to practicing in the famous Meetirigala Forest Monastery of the Galduwa tradition.

Bhante Sumana was born and raised in Washington, D.C., USA and became a Buddhist at the age of 18. As a lay person, he attended meditation retreats in the Mahasi Sayadaw tradition and with most Ven. Yogavacara Rahula Maha Thera, the former vice abbot of the Bhavana Society in West Virginia and the current director of the Paññasiha – Lion of Wisdom Meditation Center near Damascus, Maryland, USA. He was also involved in a prominent Buddhist group at the Washington Buddhist Vihara in Washington, D.C. and had the opportunity to visit Forest Dhamma Monastery in the Thai Forest Tradition of Ajaan Maha Boowa in southwestern Virginia. 

Ven. USA Sumana was ordained in the Burmese tradition in 2021 and spent time training with Sayadaw U Tejinda and Sayadaw U Aggañña of the Pa-Auk tradition in California before relocating to Sri Lanka to train in the forest tradition there. He considers Ven. Denmark Ñanadipa to be a primary inspiration of his.
