Ayyā Sudhammā Therī
Ayyā Sudhammā Therī | (Founder | Charlotte Buddhist Vihara in Charlotte, NC))
Originally from Charlotte, NC, Bhikkhunī Sudhammā was once married and enjoying a career as an attorney, before a catastrophic cancer turned her life upside down. In the midst of these trials she embraced Buddhism, appreciating the teachings on impermanence, and soon wished to ordain.
She received novice ordination from Bhante Gunaratana at the Bhavana Society in 1999, and higher ordination in 2003 from the newly-revived Sangha of Bhikkhunis in Sri Lanka – the first Western woman to gain that blessing from them.
Ayyā Sudhammā served as the resident monk of the Carolina Buddhist Vihara in Greenville, SC, for 8 years. In 2013 she founded in her hometown the Charlotte Buddhist Vihara, where she still resides and teaches. She recently celebrated her 20th Vassa as a bhikkhuni.
