Ayyā Phalañāni Therī
Brief Resume of Ayyā Phalañāni Therī
Ayya Phalañāṇī Therī was born in 1959 in Germany. At age 19 she encountered
Zen Buddhism in Düsseldorf and went to a retreat at Sogenji, Japan with Shodo
Harada Roshi. Meditation and studying the Suttas was a part of her life since then.
She followed a career as actress and comedian until 2007, when she went Thailand
where she practiced Vipassana with Ajahn Suphan und Ajahn Tong. In June 2008
she took the robes, being allowd to practice like a monk and to undertake the 10
precepts. She received ordination als bhikkhuni on the 29.08.2010 with Ayya
Tathālokā Mahatherī in Aranya Bodhi Hermitage in NorCal, USA. After her full
ordination Ayya Phalañāṇī returned to Thailand to train with her teachers and to
continue her meditation retreat. In 2012 she spent several months in Santi Forest
Monastery in Australia and was appointed the leader but retired from there to
continue her meditation retreat for 5 more years in a remote and poor
villagemonastery in the mountains of Chiang Mai area, Baan Khun Pang, Wat Pa
Mieang Khun Pang. Since April 2018 she is abbess at Anenja Vihara in Germany
where she teaches and trains nuns and laypeople.
