Observing Eight Precepts is a very unique practice by Buddhists. They practice it every Full Moon Day apart from their Daily Five Precepts.

VANDANĀ – Homage

TI-SARAṆA – Three Refuges

Buddhaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāmi

Dhammaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāmi

Saṅghaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāmi

Dutiyampi buddhaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāmi

Dutiyampi dhammaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāmi

Dutiyampi saṅghaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāmi

Tatiyampi buddhaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāmi

I go to the Buddha as my refuge.

I go to the Dhamma as my refuge.

I go to the Sangha as my refuge.

For the second time, I go to the Buddha as my refuge.

For the second time, I go to the Saṅgha as my refuge.
For the third time, I go to the Buddha as my refuge.

For the third time, I go to the Dhamma as my refuge.

For the third time, I go to the Sangha as my refuge.

Aṭṭha Sīla – Eight Precepts

Pānātipātā veramaṇī sikkhā padaṃ samādiyāmi

Adinnādānā veramaṇī sikkhā padaṃ samādiyāmi

Kāmesu micchācārā veramaṇī sikkhā padaṃ samādiyāmi

Musāvādā veramaṇī sikkhā padaṃ samādiyāmi

Surā meraya majja pamādaṭṭhānā veramaṇī sikkhā padaṃsamādiyāmi

Vikāla bhojanā veramaṇī sikkhā padaṃsamādiyāmi

Mālā gandha vilepana dhārana maṇḍana vibhūsanaṭṭhānā veramaṇī sikkhā padaṃsamādiyāmi

Uccāsayana mahāsayanā veramaṇī sikkhā padaṃsamādiyāmi


I undertake to observe the precept to abstain from killing living beings.

I undertake to observe the precept to abstain from taking things not given.

I undertake to observe the precept to abstain from sexual misconduct.

I undertake to observe the precept to abstain from false speech.

I undertake to observe the precept to abstain from distilled and fermented liquor (drinks and drugs) that causes intoxication or heedlessness.Guard your heart spiritual formation postmodern

I undertake to observe the precept to abstain from eating at inappropriate times

I undertake to observe the precept to abstain from dancing, singing, music and unseemly shows; from the use of garlands, perfumes and unguents; from things that tend to beautify and adorn (the person)

I undertake to observe the precept to abstain from (using) high and luxurious seats.

This is a self proclaimed contract you sign with yourself. So you are the one who actually knows how you work on your precepts. You must be mindful and keep on progressing. Observing Eight Precepts every Full Moon Day will be very helpful to keep yourself connected to the Dhamma and it will continue to improve your self confidence. You can be a happier and healthier person always.

Remember:

  • Observe Eight Precepts every Full Moon Day or close by a weekend day or a holiday
  • Once a month only
  • Read the Pali along with the corresponding meaning
  • Determine the time duration that you are going to preserve your Eight Precepts.
  • Recognize your weaker Precept and pay more attention to that.
  • Eight Precept Day should be a very serious day.
  • Observe it with more determination.
