Dec 24th to 26th (waxing lunar crescent)

A greatly surprised and unplanned second epilogue to the lunar series i’ve offered this year on The Journey of Sanghamitta & the Bodhi Tree – December 24th, on what was likely the lunar anniversary of former queen and at that time new bhikkhunī Anulā Therī’s complete awakening and fulfillment of the Arahant Path, after nearly a full calendar year of excavations, the principle reliquary cache in the womb (garbha) or heart of the Anulā Tissa Stupa –also known as the Anulā Devī Cetiya– was accessed and opened, and within it more than 500 relics were discovered, including bodily relics (sārīrika dhātu). On Christmas morning here in North America, the first reports from the press conference held on site at the Anulā Stupa were shared by friends in Sri Lanka, and the news reports shared by the Venerable project leaders and Director General of the Sri Lankan Department of Archeology began to pour in:

These were followed within the next 24 hours by further news of what was perhaps the largest assembling of Therāvada Bhikkhunīs ever in any of our lifetimes:

අනුලා මහා රහත් තෙරණිය වන්දනා කරන්න මහා සෙනගක්

“Large Crowds Gather to Venerate Great Arahatī Anulā Therī”

ඓතිහාසික අනුලා චෛත්‍යයේ සිදු කළ කැනීමිවලින් හමුවු ධාතූන්වහන්සේලා වැඳපුදා ගැනීමට දිවයිනේ නන්දෙසින් මෙහනින් වහන්සේලා 5000 අධික පිරිසක් අද දින වැඩම කර සිටියහ.

“More than 5000 Venerable Nuns came from all around the Island today to venerate the sacred relics unearthed during the excavation of the Anulā Cetiya.”

With only approximately 5600 Theravāda Bhikkhunīs known currently to exist in the world, the large majority of them were gathered here.

මේ අතර අනුලා දේවී චෛත්‍ය පුදබිමේ දී සුවිශේෂී දානමය පුණ්‍ය කර්මයක් ද අද සංවිධානය කර තිබුණා.

“A special, exceptional Dāna Puṇyakarma Almsgiving event was organized in conjunction [with the viewing of the sacred relics] today at the Anulā Devī Cetiya shrine.”

 

I would like to comment a little here on the importance of these moments.

In one of the photos, we see a young daughter with her mother, the newly-inaugurated statue of Anulā Therī in the background, walking away after having seen the now-revealed ancient form of the excavated arahant therī’s stupa, together with her exhumed and new revealed, long-hidden, corporal relics. December 26th was probably the first day that any daughters, or mothers–or bhikkhunīs–were able to see their arahant therī foremother’s relics on-site, at the stupa dedicated for them, in any of our lifetimes. And not only in our lifetimes. It is hard to say how long it is has been…since any of us had such benefit and blessings.

And it is hard to say how profound and impact this will have for us. Human beings are profoundly relational. Contact with awakening and awakened beings is transformational (for all but those with the darkest and most occluded karma). We know from the stories of others that this may extend beyond meeting them in life, but in whatever way we feel we are able to come into their presence and to connect. We acknowledge this can happen in many different ways.

Strikingly, December 24th, the time of the discovery, was less than 24 hours after the New Moon Anniversary of Anulā Therī’s ordination with Sanghamittā Therī, per the ancient Pāli-text chronicles passed down in Sri Lanka. This was in 247 BCE, now 2269 years ago. The texts say that “very shortly” after Anulā’s ordination she attained complete awakening, arahat-hood. So, probably around the 2269th Anniversary of her joining the ranks of the Arahats, and of the Arahatīs.

මෙහෙණි ශාසනය මුළු ලොවටම හඳුන්වා දුන් ඓතිහාසික මිහින්තලා පුද බිමේ පිහිටි අනුලා චේතියෙ සිදු කරන කැණීම්වලදී හමුවු ඓතිහාසික පුරා විද්‍යා වටිනාකමකින් යුත් ,ධාතූන් වහන්සේලා ,ආභරණ ,ඇතුළු වටිනා භාණ්ඩ රැසක් අනුලා චෛත්‍යය අබියස දී පුරාවිද්‍යා අධ්‍යක්ෂ ජනරාල්වරයා මහජන ප්‍රදර්ශනය සඳහා විවෘත කළේ ය .

The Director General of Archeology opened for public exhibition the sacred relics (dhātu), jewels and other precious items of historical archaeological value found during the excavations of Anulā Cetiya, introducing the Bhikkhunī Sāsana to the whole world.

ලංකාවේ සෑම ස්ථානයකම වෙසෙන මෙහෙණින් වහන්සේලාට එය දැක වැඳ පුදා ගැනීම සඳහා අද (26) දින ඉඩකඩ විවෘත කර ඇති බව, මිහින්තලා රජ මහා විහාරාධිපති ආචාර්යය වලවාහැංගුණවැවේ ධම්මරතන හිමියෝ පැවසූහ .

Ven. Dr. Walawahengunuwewa Dhammarathana Thero, chief incumbent of Mihintala Raja Maha Vihara, said that the place has been opened today (Dec 26th 2022) for the devotees living in every place in Sri Lanka to see and venerate it.

මාස කිහිපයක් මුළුල්ලේ පුරාවිද්‍යා නිලධාරින් සිදු කළ කැණීම්වලදී පළිඟු කරඬු ,ශෛලම මංජුසා ,ආභරණ (වළලු ,මුදු) විවිධ පබළු වර්ග ,ධාතූන් වහන්සේලා හා එවැනි දෑ තැන්පත් කර තිබූ විවිධ ආකාරයේ භාණ්ඩ රැසක් හමු වී ඇත .

During the excavations carried out by the archeological officers over the past several months, many different types of vessels have been found in which crystal caskets, stone manjusa, ornaments (bangles, rings), various types of beads, and the like were kept, together with the holy relics (dhātu).

ඒ සියල්ලම අනුලා චේතිය අසල පිහිටි ඉතාමත්ම සුරක්ෂිත ආකාරයෙන් කුටියක් ඉදි කර මහජන ප්‍රදර්ශනය සඳහා තැන්පත් කර තිබින.

During the excavations carried out by the archeological officers over several months, all the crystal reliquaries were kept in a very secure chamber that was constructed near Anulā Cetiya, where they were placed for public display.

The cultural relics and heritage properties were inspected on-site at the Anulā Cetiya by Archeology Director General Senior Professor Anura Manatunga who came to Mihintale to do so, together with Anuradhapura District Excavation Officer A.A. Vijayaratne, Mihintale Raja Maha Vihara Head Ven. Dr. Walawahengunuwewa Dhammarathana Thero and Nagananda University Chancellor Ven. Dr. Bodagama Chandima, accompanied by police officers and military personnel.

Nearly 1000 Venerable Bhikkhus also attended, and Mihintale prefect Venerable Dr. Valahangunawewe Dhammarathana Thero and Venerable Bodagama Chandima Thero organized for offerings of dry goods and financial donations for the 5000 Venerable Bhikkhunis attending.

ධාතුවහන්සේ ප්‍රදර්ශනය කිරීමෙන් අනතුරුව නැවතත් ලබන වසරේ දි සෑම දිස්ත්‍රික්කයකම පාහේ ධාතු වහන්සේ ප්‍රදර්ශනය කිරීමට සැලසුම් කර ඇතැයි මිහින්තලේ නා හිමි පවසති.

Mihintale’s leading Thero said that after offering viewing (holy darśan) of the sacred relics (dhātu) [on site at the cetiya from which they were exhumed], it is planned to offer viewing of the sacred relics in almost every district of the Island in the coming year.

ඊට අමතරව ශ්‍රීපාද විහාරාධිපති පැල්මඩුල්ල රජමහ විහාරය සහ රත්නපුර පොත්ගුල් රජමහා විහාරස්ථානයේ විහාරාධිපති රත්නපුර දිසාවේ ප්‍රධාන සංඝනායක, ඌව වෙල්ලස්ස විශ්ව විද්‍යාලයේ කුලපති ත්‍රිපිටකාචාර්ය ආචාර්ය බෙංගමුවේ ධම්මදින්න මාහිමියන් වහන්සේ ද, ලන්ඩන් නුවර තේමස් විහාරාධිපති පහලගම සෝමරතන නාහිමියන්ද, අමරපුර මූලවංශික මහා නිකායේ අනුනායක යෝගියානේ සෝභිත හිමියන්ද, දකුණු පළාතේ ප්‍රධාන සංඝනායක කෑගල්ලේ රතනසාර හිමියන් ද වැඩම කළ සිටියහ. මෙම අවස්ථාවට වියට්නාම තානාපති හෝ තන් ටෘක් මහත්මිය සහභාගී වූවාය.

In addition to this, the head of the Siripada Vihara, Pelmadulla Rajamaha Vihara, and the head of the Ratnapura Pothgul Rajamaha Vihara, together with the Chief Sanghanayaka of the Ratnaypura District, and Uva Wellassa University Chancellor Chief Dr. Sanghanayaka Kegalle Ratanasara Thero, were also present. The event was attended by Vietnamese Ambassador Mrs. Ho Thi Thanh Truc.

පුරාවිද්‍යා අධ්‍යක්ෂ ජනරාල් මහාචාර්ය අනුර මනතුංග පැවසූවේ එම කැණීම්වල දී සොයාගත් සියලු පුරා වස්තූන් එක් කර කෞතුකාගාරයක් ඉදි කිරීමට බලාපොරොත්තු වන බව යි.

Director General of Archeology Professor Anura Manatunga said that it is hoped to build a museum with all the ancient objects found in the excavations.

මිහින්තලේ අනුලා දේවී චෛත්‍යය සැලකෙන්නේ, මෙරට ප්‍රථම භික්ෂුණිය වූ අනුලා මෙහෙණිය ප්‍රමුඛ භික්ෂූණින් වැඩ වාසය කළ ස්ථානය ලෙසයි.

Anulā Devī Cetiya in Mihintale is considered to be the place where the first bhikkhunī [of Sri Lanka], the leading nun Anulā, dwelled and undertook her monastic work [in Buddhism].

වල් බිහි වී විනාශයට පත්වෙමින් තිබූ මෙම ස්ථානය මීට වසරකට පමණ පෙර පුරාවිද්‍යා දෙපාර්තමේන්තුව විසින් සංරක්ෂණය කිරිම ආරම්භ කළා.

The Department of Archeology started the conservation of the site, which was being overrun by vegetation, about one year ago.

එම කැණීම්වලදී අනුලා මෙහෙණින් වහන්සේගේ බවට විශ්වාස කළ හැකි ධාතූන් වහන්සේඇතුළු පුරාවස්තු රැසක් සොයාගැනීමට සමත්ව තිබෙනවා.

During those excavations, many antiquities have been found, including sacred relics that can be believed to belong to the Venerable Nun Anulā.

හමු වූ පුරාවස්තූ නිරීක්ෂණය කිරීම සඳහා පුරාවිද්‍යා අධ්‍යක්ෂ ජනරාල් මහාචාර්ය අනුර මනතුංග ඇතුළු පිරිසක් එම ස්ථානයේ නිරීක්ෂණ චාරිකාවක නිරත වුණා.

The crematory remains found in the excavations were examined by the officers in charge of archaeological excavations in Mihintale, AA Wijayarathne, and Venerable Walahangunuvewe Dhammarathana Thero of the Mihintale Rajamaha Vihara.

“මෙම භූමිය මීට වසරකට කලින් තිබ්බෙ නිකම්ම පස් ගොඩක් වගේ, දැන් ඉතා දර්ශනීය ස්තූපයක් විදියට ගොඩනැගීමට අපට පුළුවන්කම ලැබිලා තියෙනවා. ඒ කාර්ය කරනු ලැබුවේ පුරාවිද්‍යා දෙපාර්තමේන්තුවේ කැණීම් අංශය විසින්. මෙය පුරාවිද්‍යාත්මක වශයෙන් සංරක්ෂණය කරලා මහජනතාවට වන්දනාමාන කළ හැකි ආකාරයට ප්‍රතිසංස්කරණය කිරීමට අපි බලාපොරොත්තු වෙනවා. ඒ කාර්ය කරනු ලැබුවේ පුරාවිද්‍යා දෙපාර්තමේන්තුවේ කැණීම් අංශය විසින්. මෙය පුරාවිද්‍යාත්මක වශයෙන් සංරක්ෂණය කරලා මහජනතාවට වන්දනාමාන කළ හැකි ආකාරයට ප්‍රතිසංස්කරණය කිරීමට අපි බලාපොරොත්තු වෙනවා. ඒ සඳහා සැලසුමක් සකස් කරගෙන යනවා. ඒ සඳහා වන මූල්‍ය අනුග්‍රහය අපේ ආචාර්ය බෝදාගම චන්දිම මාහිමිපාණන් විසින් ලබාදීමට පොරොන්දු වී තිබෙනවා. ඒ වගේම මේ ස්ථානයේ පර්යේෂණ කටයුතු නාගානන්ද විශ්වවිද්‍යාලය සමග සහයෝගිත්වයෙන් සිදු කිරීමට බලාපොරොත්තු වෙනවා.

Mr. Anura Manatunga, Director General of Archaeology, commented:

“This site was just an earthen mound a year ago; but now we have been able to reveal its construction as a very spectacular stupa. The work was done by the excavation department of the Department of Archeology. We hope to preserve it archaeologically and restore it in a way that it can be honored and appreciated by the public. It is hoped that the research work at this place will be done in collaboration with Nagananda University.”

මේ ස්ථානයේ කැණීම්වලින් අපට ඉතාමත් වැදගත් වෙනවා ධාතුන් වහන්සේලා සොයාගැනීම, අපි විශ්වාස කරන විදිහට මෙය අනුලා මහරහත් තෙරණින් වහන්සේගේ වෙන්න පුළුවන්, අපට තාම ස්ථිරවම කියන්න බැහැ කාගෙද කියලා. ඒ වගේම පළිඟු කරඬු, ලෝහ ආභරණ, කාසි, මංජුසා, පබලු ආදිය මෙම ස්ථානයෙන් සොයාගෙන තිබෙනවා. ඒ සියලුම දේවල් සහ තවත් බොහෝ දේවල් අපට ඉදිරියේදී හමුවෙයි. මේ භූමියේ හෝ මිහින්තලේ යම් ස්ථානයක කෞතුකාගාරයක් ස්ථාපිත කරලා ඒවා මහජනතාවට වන්දනාමාන කිරීමට හැකි පරිදි තැන්පත් කිර්මට අපි බලාපොරොත්තු වෙනවා” යනුවෙන් කියා සිටියේය.

“It is very important for us that we have found sacred relics from the excavations at this place, as we believe this may be of Mahā Arhatī Anulā Therī; although we still cannot say for sure who’s holy relics these are. Also, crystal caskets, metal ornaments, coins, manjusha, beads etc. have been found in this place. All those things and more we will exhibit in the future. We hope to establish a museum on this land or somewhere in Mihintale and enshrine them there, so that the public can give due reverence to them.”

මෙරට ප්‍රථම බුද්ධ ශ්‍රාවිකාව වූ අනුලා මහරහත් තෙරණිය ඇතුළු පන්සිය නමක් බුද්ධ ශ්‍රාවිකාවන් වෙනුවෙන් ක්‍රිස්තු පූර්ව තෙවැනි සියවසේ විහාර මහා දේවියගේ මූලිකත්වයෙන් ඉදිකළ දැනට ගරා වැටී විනාශ වෙමින් පවතින ඓතිහාසික අනුලා චෛත්‍ය පුදබිම නැවත ප්‍රතිස්ථාපනය කිරීමේ පුණ්‍ය උත්සවය පසුගියදා ආරම්භ කෙරිණි. තායිවානයේ ප්‍රධාන සංඝනායක, නාගානන්ද ජත්‍යන්තර බෞද්ධ විශ්වවිද්‍යාලයේ නිර්මාතෘ හා කුලපති පූජ්‍ය ආචාර්ය බෝදාගම චන්දිම නාහිමියන්ගේ ප්‍රධානත්වයෙන් මිහින්තලා රජමහා විහාරාධිපති පූජ්‍ය ආචාර්ය වලවාහැංගුණවැවේ ධම්මරතන නාහිමියන්ගේ අනුශාසනා පරිදි මෙම සෑයේ ඉදිකිරීම් කටයුතු සිදු කෙරෙන අතර, චෛත්‍ය ප්‍රතිස්ථාපන කටයුත්ත පුරාවිද්‍යා දෙපාර්තමේන්තුවේ පූර්ණ අධීක්ෂණය යටතේ සිදු කෙරේ.

A great Almsgiving was held recently to commemorate the restoration of the historic Anula Chaitya shrine which was built in the third century BCE by Vihāramahādevī for five hundred disciples including the great arahatī Anulā Therī, who was the first awakened Buddha’s disciple (srāvikā) in Sri Lanka. Under the leadership of Taiwan’s Chief Sanghanayaka, founder and chancellor of Nagananda International Buddhist University Ven. Dr. Bodagama Chandima, and under the guidance of Mihintale Rajamaha Vihara chief prelate Ven. Dr. Valahangunawe Dhammarathana, the excavation of this sacred place is being carried out, with the pagoda restoration work being done under the full supervision of the Department of Archaeology.

ඉතා පැරණි ඉතිහාසයක් ඇති අනුලා චෛත්‍යය පිහිටි පුදබිම 1926 වසරේදී පුරාවිද්‍යා බිමක් බවට පත්කර ඇතත්, කාලයාගේ ඇවෑමෙන් විනාශයට පත්ව තිබිණි. සංඝමිත්තා මහ රහත් තෙරණිය ශ්‍රී මහ බෝධීන් වහන්සේ මෙරටට වැඩමවීමෙන් අනතුරුව අනුලා බිසව ප්‍රමුඛ කුල කාන්තාවන් පන්සියයක පිරිස එක්ව පැවිදි වී මෙහෙණි සසුන ආරම්භ කර, අනුලා චෛත්‍යය පිහිටි පින්බිමේ සිට ත්‍රිපිටකය හදාරා බුදුදහම ව්‍යාප්ත කිරීමට කටයුතු කළ බවද කියැවේ.

The sacred site where the Anula Chaitya is located has a very ancient history and was made an archaeological site in 1926, but had been destroyed by the passage of time. It is said that after Mahā Arahatī Sanghamittā Therī came with the Sri Maha Bodhi to Sri Lanka, two groups of five hundred royal women led by Queen Anulā were ordained together and started the Bhikkhunī Sāsana, studying and teaching the Tripitaka from the sacred place where Anula Chaitya is located, worked to spread Buddhism.
