Knowledge Management / Informatics:

Since completing a graduate degree in 1974, I have been committed to the sharing of knowledge resources as broadly and equitably as possible and particularly committed to the application of new and emergent digital technologies to support knowledge sharing.

 Principal Investigator on a $550,000 National Science Foundation Information Technology
Research Grant (2004) focusing on digitization and data mining of the literature of
biological systematics
 Principal Investigator on a $2.3M digital library grant from the AW Mellon Foundation (SEE:
http://diglib1.amnh.org/ and http://digitallibrary.amnh.org/dspace/ )
 Participant in bilateral negotiations between the US and China (PRC) on sharing of marine
science information; traveled to China to negotiate exchanges of information;
delivered lectures on computer applications in information management (NSF /
1986)
 Principal Investigator on the Puget Sound Access Project to compile a comprehensive
database of literature on Puget Sound (supported by the University of Washington
and the US Environmental Protection Agency) (1986-1987).
 Database project for the Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary using the Puget
Sound Access model (1987-1988).
 Direct involvement in the development of community data standards in the natural history
community; publication of “Toward Community Standards in Systematics” in
Spectra: The Journal of the Museum Computer Network (1989). (This analysis can
be seen as one of the logical precursors of the Global Biodiversity Information
Facility.)
 Compiler of the Conservation Thesaurus; anticipating ontological developments within the
Semantic Web framework (IUCN, 1996)
 Leader in the initial development and implementation of the Biodiversity Heritage Library
project a mass digitization initiative now involving 10 major natural history libraries
in the UK and the United States (2004-2006) SEE: http://bhl.si.edu/
 Visiting Associate Professor, Pratt Institute, Graduate School of Library and Information
Science. (Fall Semester, 2005)
 Principal Investigator at the Getty Research Institute on $200,000 mass digitization grant from
the Sloan Foundation / Open Content Alliance / Internet Archive. (2006-2007)
 Oversight and implementation of a collaborative scholarly Website based on digitization of
English/French/German and Dutch versions of Bernard Picart’s “Ceremonies et coutumes
religieuses de tous les peuples du monde.” (in collaboration with UCLA and The Huntington
Library)
 Author of numerous articles and presentations including: “Building the Biodiversity
Commons” D-Lib Magazine (June 2002) Vol 8:6 [SEE:

Sciences: Biology and conservation

professional experience has included work in universities, museums, research institutes and the federal government. Among accomplishments:
 Leader in efforts to compile and release the World Database on Protected Areas released in
2002 at the World Parks Congress in Durban, South Africa. Current version
contains records for 120,000 protected areas worldwide and providing a basis for
global gap analysis.
 Leader of the Biodiversity Conservation Information System (BCIS) initiative – a coalition of 12 major international conservation organizations (and its successor The Conservations Commons) devoted to the conscious sharing of biodiversity data, information and knowledge.  Team member for US NSF Ocean Sciences Division in negotiations with the PRC State
Oceanic Administration on annex to the Protocol on Cooperation in the Marine Sciences.
(Included individual travel to China in August, 1986.)
 Design and implementation of the Biodiversity Resource Center at the California Academy of
Sciences (the BRC began in 1991and by 1998 had 1.5 FTE professional staff and 45
volunteers).

 Consultation (for IUCN) in Pakistan and Nepal on their respective national conservation
strategies. (1994)
 Planning and design for the Protected Areas Resource Centers (PARC) / Protected Areas
Learning Network (PALNet) projects (IUCN World Commission on Protected

 Co-editor the Sierra Club Wetlands Reader (1996)
 Council member Bahamas National Trust(2000-2004)

 Participant in numerous programs and panels focused on the analysis, management and
sharing of scientific knowledge. (ongoing)

conscious and effective sharing of scientific knowledge resources

Administration:

In a variety of roles, I have a substantial record of successful administrative experience,
working in both the public and private sector in increasingly complex organizational frameworks including libraries, project work and professional organizations. I have successfully accomplished staff re-organizations, re-designs of organizational space, financial restructuring and recovery from disaster.
Currently chief administrator for an academic research institute with a staff of >240 and a budget of $25M.


Development: Gifts/Grants/Contracts:

For 25 years, involvement with successful solicitation of grants, contracts and gifts in both the private and public sectors. Frequent service on visiting committees, site visit panels, advisory committees and regular participation in peer review activities (including reviews of
scholarly papers and grant proposals).
