A Little Boy’s Hard Life
Long ago in India, there lived a little boy named Sunita. He was only about 10 years old, but he already had to work every day cleaning the streets and picking up trash. Back then, some families were told they could only do certain jobs, and Sunita’s family had to be street cleaners.
Little Sunita lived with his family in a small hut outside the city. He wore old, patched-up clothes and often felt hungry. Every morning, he would take his little cleaning basket and walk through the streets, picking up garbage and trying to keep the city clean.
When Sunita saw important people coming, he would quickly hide behind walls or duck into doorways. He had been taught that children like him weren’t supposed to be seen by fancy people, which made him feel very sad and invisible.
## A Scary But Amazing Day
One morning, little Sunita was sweeping the street when he saw the Buddha walking toward him with some of his grown-up monk students. Sunita got really scared! He quickly pressed himself against a wall and tried to make himself as small as possible.
“Oh no!” he thought. “Someone as important as the Buddha shouldn’t have to see a dirty little street cleaner like me!”
But something wonderful happened. Instead of walking past the frightened little boy, the Buddha stopped and came right up to him! Even his monk students were very surprised.
## The Kindest Voice
The Buddha knelt down so he was at little Sunita’s eye level and said in the gentlest voice, “Hello there, little friend. What’s your name?”
Sunita was so shocked his mouth fell open! No grown-up had ever spoken to him so kindly before. In a tiny whisper, he told the Buddha his name and explained that he was just a street cleaner.
The Buddha’s eyes were so warm and kind as he said, “Sunita, do you know what I think? I think you have one of the kindest hearts I’ve ever seen. It doesn’t matter what job you do—what matters is how good and caring you are inside. And you, little one, are very special.”
## An Incredible Invitation
Then the Buddha said something that made little Sunita’s eyes grow as big as saucers: “Would you like to come learn with me and my students? I think you would make a wonderful young monk!”
Sunita couldn’t believe his ears! He looked around to make sure the Buddha was really talking to him. When he realized it was true, tears of happiness rolled down his cheeks, and he nodded yes as hard as he could.
Right away, something magical happened. Sunita’s torn clothes became clean orange robes just his size, and he got his very own food bowl, just like the grown-up monks!
## Learning with New Friends
The monk students welcomed little Sunita like a new little brother. In the Buddha’s group, it didn’t matter if you were tall or short, rich or poor, young or old—everyone was treated with love and respect.
Little Sunita was the youngest student, but he worked very hard to learn. Because he had felt sad and left out for so long, he really understood how it felt when people were hurting, and he wanted to help them feel better.
## Becoming Extra Special
Even though he was just a child, Sunita learned so fast and became so wise and kind that everyone was amazed! The Buddha was especially proud of his young student.
As Sunita grew up in the monastery, he became one of the wisest and most caring monks anyone had ever known. People who used to ignore him when he was a little street cleaner now came from far away to ask for his advice!
## What Little Sunita’s Story Teaches Us
**Every Kid Is Important**: It doesn’t matter what your family does for work or how much money you have—every single child is special and valuable.
**Kindness Is Magic**: When the Buddha was kind to little Sunita, it changed everything! We can make magic happen too by being kind to kids who feel left out.
**Hard Times Can Make You Strong**: Because Sunita had such tough times as a little boy, he grew up to be extra good at helping other people who were sad or scared.
**Don’t Judge by Appearances**: The Buddha saw how wonderful Sunita was on the inside, even when he looked like just a poor little street cleaner. We should look for the good in every person too.

Little Sunita went from being a lonely, scared little boy who had to hide from people to becoming one of the most loved and respected teachers in the whole country! People still tell Sunita’s story today to remind us that every child deserves love and kindness, and that any kid can grow up to do incredible things if they have a good heart and people who believe in them.
